National Orienteering Day/Week
National Orienteering Day is the first Sunday in May (4th in
2008) and serves to raise awareness of the sport and provide opportunities for
people to ‘Give Orienteering a Go’ at an ideal time of the year. States/local communities are encouraged to
conduct a National Orienteering Week with a number of orienteering
opportunities as the ACT has done for several years if they wish.
Events
States and clubs are encouraged to advertise
upcoming events suitable for newcomers to the sport. In 2008 there is a Badge
event in Western Australia, and other States are asked to notify OA of details of these events (as in an event guide) as soon
as possible. OA will list all promotional events on the website and in any
promotional material. Events are posted at: http://orienteering.asn.au/events/national_day/
Promotion
A generalised story will be used for a
media release to AAP. In OA’s experience
however, it expects much better success from local media sources. States and
clubs are expected to arrange local publicity. OA has prepared a promotional package to assist in local
publicity. The promotional package includes:
States/clubs should endeavour to create a
local interest story for their media. The general notice outline in the
promotional package should be modified to suit local circumstances as
indicated.
Some States have previously placed two advertisements in major dailies in the
lead-up to the day promoting their event (e.g. weekend before and mid-week).
This is a highly effective means of advertising events.
Your efforts in supporting this National
incentive are appreciated.
