The Western Australian Sprint Distance Orienteering Championships and last race of the Nav Dash sprint series were held at Scotch College yesterday.
It happened to be the day after the record drought broke, but we were lucky and the skies cleared just before the start. The map was detailed and the course was technical, favouring the level-headed, but the 85 competitors were up for the challenge. Oscar McNulty and Cath Chalmers were crowned the new State Champions. Oscar won by almost a minute, ahead of a very strong field, with Steve Fletcher and John Toomey taking out the minor places. Sarah Dunnage and Rachel West finished second and third in the open women.
A highlight of the day was the conclusive victory of the Junior Team, ahead of some very strong opposition, in the Series Teams’ Challenge. The four juniors, Oscar and Henry McNulty, Joe Dowson and Bill Mann, showed amazing consistency throughout the series, and gave up the chance of winning the Junior Category in the State Champs to race Open and consolidate their team win.
