The Queensland Sprint championships were contested on Sunday at Kelvin Grove Urban Village, a technical area consisting of QUT Kelvin Grove campus, and adjacent schools, colleges and shops. A feature of all courses was long route choice legs where runners needed to avoid significant climb while deciphering tricky passageways and level changes.
There were close contests for the wins in both senior elite classes. In M21E Kieran Sullivan (BU.Q) took a 15sec lead over Oliver Mitchell (UG.Q) at the first control, and although he extended it to 30 secs through the middle part of the course, a fast finish by Mitchell had it back to 15secs by the finish. Kurt Neumann (EN.Q) was in the mix with one control to go, but a late mistake relegated him to 3rd. In the womens elite course Anna Sheldon (UG.Q) took an early lead, but was steadily caught and passed by Rachel Effeney through the mid part of the course. Effeney (UG.Q) had a 14sec lead at the penultimate control, but in a late surge Sheldon fought back for a 30sec win. Brea Pearce (EV.T) ran up into W21E to take 3rd.
Recently selected Australian Junior MTBO team member Chris Firman (EN.Q) took victory in M20E from Oliver Crosato (RR.Q) and Aaron Breed (UG.Q). W20E was won by impressive newcomer Heather Muir (EN.Q), with Brooke Pye (TF.Q) 2nd and Emily Cantwell (UG.Q) 3rd.
