Be a Controller

Manage the quality, safety and technical standards of orienteering events

What does a controller Do?

Controllers manage the quality, safety and technical standards of orienteering events. They work in partnership with a course planner, and often with an event manager. A controller ensures each event is well organised and meets the expectations of participants. Orienteering Australia and its Member States/Territories train and accredit controllers for all orienteering disciplines.

The list of accredited Orienteering Australia controllers is to be found on our Technical page.

Our Controller Framework

Orienteering Australia’s Controller Framework aligns with our Strategic Plan. This framework outlines a guide to foot and MTB orienteering controller education, development and support in Australia.

Controller Accreditation Overview

There are five accredited courses in the Australian officiating pathway for event controllers. Level 1 through Level 2 and to Level 3 for orienteering and Level 1 and Level 2 for MTB orienteering. It is possible to jump in and be accredited at any level.

The Controller level corresponds to the category of orienteering events the controller supervises.

Accreditation and Reaccreditation as a Controller

Accreditation as a controller is valid for five years. During which time a controller must acquire a certain number of ‘points’ over an eight-year period to qualify for re-accreditation. The ‘points’ table for Controller Re-accreditation is available here – Controller Reaccreditation Points Table

Controllers can use the PDF forms below to keep track of their controlling practice. They submit this and the signed Controller Code of Conduct form when applying for accreditation or re-accreditation.

The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) has an accreditation scheme for International Event Advisers. This is a separate scheme to the Orienteering Australia accreditation scheme. This level of accreditation is required to be a controller for a World Ranking Event (WRE). The IOF maintains this list for orienteering here and for Mountain Bike orienteering the list is here.
