New to Park/Street Orienteering

The basics of this type of orienteering

About

Park/street orienteering events take place in urban areas such as suburbs and parks of towns and cities across Australia. These events are a great way to get out and experience the great Australian outdoors in your town or city. They take place all year round. In summer they can be earlier or later in the day

The Basics

Park/street orienteering is using a map to navigate around a course through a series of control points within urban based environments. Courses often have lots of control points scattered across the map. Courses in park/street orienteering events often require you to choose which control points you visit in the time allowed.  The navigation is not difficult, It’s a strategy challenge. Which control points can you get with optimal route choices. It usually takes 30-60 minutes to complete a course, depending on your choice.

Some park/street orienteering events are a line format. You must visit all the control points on your course in a set order, in the fastest possible time.

Most sprint orienteering events use an electronic timing system named “Sportident” or an app on your phone called “MapRun”. These record your time though each control point and your total time. You can compare the time it took you to get to each control with others on your course.
