Bridget Uppill has joined Orienteering Australia to further develop and expand KID-O. This new phase for KID-O aims to make this innovative program widely accessible to young children throughout Australia, helping them gain orienteering skills while fostering personal development.
KID-O, designed for children aged 0-8, introduces basic orienteering concepts in a fun and engaging way. The program aims to prepare children for independent orienteering and engage the whole family in the sport.
Each KID-O activity focuses on a specific orienteering skill in a game-based format, promoting sensory, gross motor, coordination, and social skills development.
As well as developing orienteering skills, KID-O also aims to help children develop an appreciation of nature and their natural surroundings.
The partnership will ensure that KID-O is available to all Australian clubs, providing facilitators with the resources and support needed to run the program effectively. By expanding KID-O’s reach, Orienteering Australia hopes to encourage more children and their families to explore orienteering, while also giving them valuable life skills that extend far beyond the sport.
“We’re thrilled to have Bridget on board to help take KID-O to the next level,” said Arpad Kocsik, General Manager of Orienteering Australia. “Her passion for child development and her experience in education has assisted her in creating this pioneering KID-O program that has already been enthusiastically embraced in Australia. We look forward to seeing the expansion of KID-O and the positive impacts it will bring for orienteering.”
“I’m excited to work with Orienteering Australia and contribute to the growth of KID-O,” said Bridget. “Orienteering is a fantastic way for kids to learn essential skills while having fun, and I can’t wait to help new facilitators bring this opportunity to children across Australia.”
The expansion of KID-O will start with a review of KID-O. Whether you’ve participated in KID-O, organised it or are simply interested, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Please complete the feedback questionnaire, available until 10th March.
